Episode 3: Staying healthy through the coronavirus with Dr. Michael Roizen
We’ve all found ourselves on a giant detour called The Coronavirus Pandemic. It has changed the way we work, gather and eat.
Dr. Michael Roizen, the first Chief Wellness Officer for the Cleveland Clinic, offers tips on how to boost your immune system to protect you from COVID-19 and how to add years to your life by changing your relationship with food.
Step away from the cookies. Leave those fries on the table. Close the door on that double chocolate chunk ice cream. Food is not entertainment, not even now, he says.
Especially now, when we all need to be our healthiest selves.
Dr. Roizen offers clear guidelines for eating:
Create a food routine so you sit down at a table and eat 3 meals, not snack all day.
Eat when the sun is out. “A calorie in the morning is less than a calorie in the evening.”
Eat 80 percent of your daily food intake by 3 p.m.
Mind the 3 Ps: Plan. Prep. Plate. Plan healthy foods to eat. Prepare them the night before. Plate your meal so it looks beautiful to eat.
To boost your immune system:
Get 7 to 8 hours of good sleep.
Take a multi-vitamin.
Avoid foods that cause inflammation and disturb the bacteria in your gut, like sugar, added syrups, cheese, processed foods.
Eat cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, arugula and brussels sprouts.
The bottom line?
Love food that will love you back and you just might add another 20 years to your life.
